Why You Shouldn't Try To "Jimmy" A Lock To Open It

There are few things as frustrating as coming back to your house after work only to realize that you can't find your key. In some cases, you may remember leaving it somewhere else but it's just as likely that you won't have any idea where the key is.

Many people's first instinct in such scenarios is to find a way past the lock. Jimmying is a commonly used method where something flat is forced in the door to move back the lock. However, this is a bad idea for several different reasons.

You'll Probably Fail

Perhaps the simplest reason why you shouldn't try to jimmy a door open is that you're quite likely to fail. Jimmying door opens may have been very effective in the past but it certainly isn't the case nowadays. Most modern locks are designed to make it impossible to open the door using this method. In fact, if you are able to jimmy your lock, you should change it as soon as possible.

Someone May Mistake You for a Burglar

Not everyone in your neighborhood or apartment building may know who you are. If a neighbor was to come across you trying to force open your door, they may assume that you're an intruder of some sort. Having to deal with the police is the last thing you'd want under such circumstances.

You Could Damage the Lock

If you left your key behind somewhere and you're sure you'll be able to get it back, there's no reason to do anything that could damage the lock. Trying to jimmy the lock open may not succeed in unlocking it but it may do some damage that makes it much harder for a professional to open it. You may also have to replace the lock which could be an unnecessary expense.

You Could Damage Your Doorframe

Jimmying a door open requires you to wedge something between the door and the doorframe. Trying to force something between this small space can end up causing some damage to your doorframe. In addition to this, the damage caused may make it easier for an intruder to find their way in later on.

Call a Professional Locksmith

If you are unable to access your keys immediately, the best course of action is to call a professional locksmith. Lockout services are designed with such situations in mind. You'll have your door open with limited fuss.
